Moving up the range

Selling data companies: what moves a buyer up the range

Updated

The same publishers that state the medians say what pushes a data company above or below them.

Describe the company

What lifts the multiple

Aventis Advisors writes that firms owning proprietary IP, holding top-tier platform partnerships and running on recurring analytics revenue clear the top quartile, while those built on business-intelligence implementation and billable hours land near the bottom.

Solganick gives the example of a Snowflake partner growing 40% a year with strong gross profit and EBITDA margins obtaining a higher EV/Revenue multiple.

A take-private at the top of the table

Clearwater Analytics was acquired by Permira for $8.4B in December 2025, a 10.9x multiple on $774M of revenue, the highest revenue multiple on the table.

Licensing instead of selling

An owner who wants to keep the company can license its data instead. We act for the company on that route and introduce an adviser for a sale of the whole business.
