Data company valuation multiples

Last updated

Each row is one publisher's stated multiple for data businesses, with the basis it is measured on and the sentence it came from.

Each published multiple's own M&A advisers' reports, SaaS indices, public comps pages and Damodaran's industry tables were read through estate-fetch and stored whole (sha256 on every row). For every deal report or comps page, five questions were answered from its own words: what kind of company the multiple covers, what the multiple is measured on, eV to revenue, as stated, eV to EBITDA, as stated, the figure, in the publisher's words. Every stated answer carries the sentence it rests on, checked against the stored text; 'not stated' means the deal report or comps page read does not address the question. A published multiple with several deal reports and comps pages reads 'varies' where they disagree. 12 published multiples, 12 deal reports and comps pages.

How it works

  1. Say what the data business sells, its revenue band and its plans.
  2. We set it beside the published multiples for its kind of business.
  3. We reply with the range that applies and the route: a licence, a sale of records, or an adviser for the whole company.

We publish multiples others state and appraise no one. Our fee is paid by the company: 12.5% of the deal, with a minimum, when we act as its exclusive agent to license its data, or 10%, with a minimum, when its data joins a bundle; a whole-company sale goes to an adviser we introduce. Publishers on the table pay nothing to appear.

How does the business earn from its data?

Why are you asking about its value?

  • Compared with 12 published multiples
  • No accounts or customer files asked for
  • A median is shown as a median, never as your price

The questions we get

What multiple do data and analytics companies sell for?

Aventis Advisors puts the median across disclosed deals from 2015 to 2025 at about 2.3x revenue and 14.9x EBITDA, and Oaklins puts data analytics and BI at around 2.3x EV/Revenue and 13.9x EV/EBITDA in the first half of 2026. Both are medians across many deals, not a price for any one company.(Data company valuation multiples, as published: every row, with its source)

Why do the published multiples differ so much?

They measure different things: a median over private sales, an index of listed SaaS companies, one listed company's trading multiple, or a take-private. Latent View Analytics trades at 3.5x EV/Revenue while Clearwater Analytics was taken private at 10.9x revenue.(Data company valuation multiples, as published: every row, with its source)

Is an information services company valued like a data analytics firm?

On the table the figures sit close: Berkery Noyes reported a 2.2x median revenue multiple for the information industry in a report more than a decade old, and Damodaran's US information services group shows 2.21 EV to sales in January 2026. EBITDA multiples run higher for data and analytics firms in the Aventis figures.(Data company valuation multiples, as published: every row, with its source)

Do we use these multiples to value our company?

No. We do not appraise companies. The table shows what publishers state so an owner can see the range a buyer will start from. For tax, the section 409A regulations ask, for the stock options and other stock rights a US company grants, for the reasonable application of a reasonable valuation method for stock not readily tradable on an established securities market; HMRC's Shares and Assets Valuation Manual sets out how HMRC values shares in unquoted companies for Inheritance Tax and Capital Gains Tax.(Data company valuation multiples, as published: every row, with its source)

How is the data itself treated when a data company is bought?

In the US, when a buyer acquires the data itself, as in an asset purchase, a database or customer list it acquires and holds in connection with its trade or business is a section 197 intangible, amortised over 15 years; under IFRS 3 the buyer allocates the price to identifiable assets at fair value, with the rest to goodwill.(Data company valuation multiples, as published: every row, with its source)

Are these multiples current?

Each row carries the day we read it, and the period where the publisher's own sentence gives one, as Aventis's 2015 to 2025 and Oaklins' first half of 2026 do. The newest read is 2026-10-28.(Data company valuation multiples, as published: every row, with its source)
